An Eyeless Mandingo Fighter (Clay Donahue Fontenot) Head from Quentin Tarantino’s revenge tale, Django Unchained. The film follows a freed slave named Django (Jamie Foxx) and Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz) as they take out known slave owners and search for Django’s lost wife, Broomhilda (Kerry Washington). The pair tracks Broomhilda down to Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio), whom they meet at a mandingo fight. This head was made for this sequence when one of the fighters gauges out the eyes of his opponent. This particular head is unseen in the final film as the gauging happens off camera.
The head is made of silicone that was made from a life cast likely of the Fontenot. The outside of the piece was painted to match Fontenot’s skin color. Short black hair has been glued to the face and head as scalp hair, beard, and eyebrows. The eyes lids and other areas of the face also still feature dried stage blood applied during filming. The inside of the head is finished with red/pink jersey toweling. The head piece has been filled in with plastic and sealed with red foam, which is still seen in the neck, making this an unwearable piece. This piece remains in good, production used condition.
