John McClane's (Bruce Willis) police ID, badge, and wallet from Renny Harlin's Die Hard 2. McClane's wallet and badge are visible throughout the film, as he frequently wears them on his belt and flashes his credentials in airport scenes. At least two badge props were created for production, with a different example featured in the close-up shot seen on screen. This example is the only one known to be still in existence. It was used during filming (though not for the close-up shot) and has been stored with Willis's screen-used watch and lighter; see subsequent lots.
Upon release, Die Hard 2 set a box-office record for the largest pre-opening gross in six years - a benchmark not surpassed until Independence Day (1996). While initially met with mixed reviews, the film has since been recognized as a modern classic and one of the defining action films of 1990.
Originating from the personal collection of property master Mike Papac, the lot includes a black leatherette wallet with a plastic-windowed card slot and badge compartment; a custom-made metal Los Angeles detective badge featuring gold-colored decal embellishments and the number "8986"; and a blue-and-white paper ID card for "Det. John McClane." The leatherette finish on the wallet exhibits extensive deterioration from age though the badge surround element is plastic and remains intact, while the badge and ID remain in good condition, showing expected scuffing, chipped paint, and wear consistent with use during production. The deteriorated pieces of leatherette have been included in this lot. Dimensions: (largest) 23 cm x 18 cm x 1.5 cm (9" x 7" x 0.5")
Estimate: £8,000 - 16,000 Ω
Mike Papac is among Hollywood's most respected armourers. Active in the film industry since the late 1970s, he served as weapons specialist on action classics including Lethal Weapon and Die Hard, and as property gun master for Predator - all within an 18-month span. By the early 1990s, Papac had become a trusted resource for leading directors such as Tony Scott, Renny Harlin, and Richard Donner, collaborating throughout the decade with stars including Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger. His career has encompassed work as prop master and armourer on some of cinema's most successful franchises, from Iron Man and Man of Steel to acclaimed action comedies like Three Kings and Red. Original hero pieces from the Die Hard films are exceptionally rare, and Propstore is proud to present these examples from Mike Papac's personal collection - offered to the public for the first time.
