A first-release, 1979 British 30 sheet poster for "The Deer Hunter," Michael Cimino's multi-Academy Award-winning Vietnam War drama. This large poster features Fred Atkins' controversial advertising campaign, which depicts Robert De Niro with a "Russian roulette" pistol to his head-a significant scene from the film. Marketing materials showcasing this imagery were withdrawn from circulation within days of their initial release, as they were deemed too disturbing. They were subsequently replaced with a different campaign. It is rare for 30 sheet poster to survive, as most were destroyed after being pasted onto billboards. This example was printed on 12 separate sheets and is folded. One lower sheet has a 1.25" edge tear, and the sheet to its right has a small area of paper loss in the lower left corner of the border.
"The Deer Hunter" is an epic war drama film directed and co-written by Michael Cimino. The story follows the lives of three Slavic-American steelworkers whose lives are irrevocably changed after they serve in the Vietnam War. The lead roles are played by Robert De Niro, Christopher Walken, and John Savage, with notable supporting performances by John Cazale (in his final film appearance), Meryl Streep, and George Dzundza. The film won three prestigious Academy Awards: "Best Picture," "Best director" (Michael Cimino), and "Best Supporting Actor" (Christopher Walken).
Estimate: $500 - 1,000
