A limited edition print of David Bowie, taken by photographer Piper Ferguson. This is the first time this limited edition photograph has been offered for sale.
The photo was taken by Ferguson in Irvine, California, on 13 August 2002 at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre. This concert was part of the singer's Heathen tour promoting his new album. The tour also featured Bowie performing all songs from his 1977 album Low, something he had not previously done. This previously unreleased print is signed by Ferguson, numbered "1/75" and the signature dated "2025". Dimensions: 58.5 cm x 43.25 cm (23" x 17")
Piper Ferguson recalls:
"Before I became a photographer, I was directing a lot of music videos. That's actually what led me to buy my first still camera-I wanted to better understand how cameras worked so I could become a stronger director. It was 2002, and I had just directed the video for Ash's song "Envy." During that shoot, I became fast friends with their brilliant guitarist, Charlotte Hatherley.
Not long after, Charlotte invited me to see them play on Moby's Area 2 tour-David Bowie was headlining! I was beyond excited. I'd only seen Bowie once before, on Halloween in 1995 at the Hollywood Palladium. That night was unforgettable.
Charlotte also mentioned she had a new boyfriend she'd met at Glastonbury who was flying out to L.A. to pitch a zombie film-his name was Edgar Wright. He didn't know anyone in town, so she introduced us. We hit it off immediately.
That night, standing next to Edgar in the photo pit, watching Bowie command the stage, was pure magic. Bowie shone like a star-part crooner, part cosmic legend-completely at ease in his skin. He radiated the depth of a life fully lived, brimming with artistry and emotion. I was in awe."
Additional Provenance:
Piper Ferguson's photographic journey began when she and a friend started a Brit Pop club called Café Bleu in Hollywood. Piper booked bands at the club and documented the scene, photographing every artist that appeared on the small stage including the Dandy Warhols and Maroon 5. She soon started work with Rolling Stone, Mojo and Filter Magazine, along with brands like Levi's, iTunes and Universal Music Group. Some notable shoots include artists like Coldplay, Richard Ashcroft, and Amy Winehouse at Coachella 2007 as well as music icons like David Crosby, Joe Strummer and David Bowie.
