A custom-made merchant marine costume from Robert Zemeckis’ sci-fi drama film Contact. Staff working on Hadden’s (John Hurt) secret machine in Hokkaido, Japan, wore their merchant marine uniforms while helping Ellie Arroway (Jodie Foster) into the machine.
The costume consists of a black jumpsuit with a Hadden logo on the left breast, black waxed overalls in size L, a black waxed raincoat in size S, a black overcoat, a pair of black Airwalk brand boots, a pair of black neoprene gloves, a black rain hat, and a black cowl. A number of the items have interior labels, onto which are handwritten performer names and "merchant marine", as well as various numbers. The gloves come with a waterproof bag, and included with the costume is a loose costume label onto which is handwritten "For Display "Merchant Marine"".
