A gray Zinj gorilla mask from Frank Marshall's Congo. Amy (Lorene Noh), Peter Elliott's (Dylan Walsh) gorilla, led an expedition to the Lost City of Zinj, an ancient ruin which had been inhabited by hostile gray gorillas for generations.
Based on the blockbuster novel by Michael Crichton, Congo and its gorillas were brought to life with a combination of performers in ape suits and state-of-the-art creature animatronics created by Stan Winston Studio. For the ape suits, SWS utilized sculpts originally created for an unproduced installment of the Planet of the Apes franchise. For his team's special effects work, Winston received a nomination for a prestigious Saturn Award®.
This Zinj gorilla mask originates from Planet Hollywood. It consists of ornately hand-painted foam latex forehead, nose, and wrinkled cheek appliances, as well as a vacuum-formed plastic noise and mouth, all hand-punched with synthetic gray fur. The mask shows evidence of wear consistent with on-set use, handling, and age, including tearing between the nose and mouth which has since been applied with tape, discoloration under some of the hair, and cracking foam throughout.
