A framed, production used storyboard copy from Steven Spielberg's sci-fi classic, Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
Cableman Roy Neary (Richard Dreyfuss) has a close encounter one night, witnessing UFOs flying through the sky. Refusing to believe an explanation for what he saw, Roy goes on a mission to pursue the truth and follow clues to meet visitors from the cosmos.
This storyboard was used for the film's extensive special effects and shows three small images of the third UFO flying low over the heads of the assembled technicians. A cameraman flips a switch. All of the cameras turn automatically on their axes and begin taking photos.
Printed in black and white, Sheet has been marked ‘SZT. 7-23’ and ‘M-7’ at the top right. Above the main image ‘EFFECT #7’ has been handwritten, while ‘7/24 RETAKE:’ has been written down the left side. Under the second image are the words, ‘Live action. Fly thru light source. Cameras flip on axis’. The back of the storyboard features detailed typed production notes, including a sequence synopsis and notes for ‘Doug’ on the production team – most likely intended for special photographic effects technician Douglas Trumbull, they show where effects needed to be applied and what elements were crucial to the scene.
The page has been hole punched at the top, where it was grouped in a sequence, forming a comprehensive shot-by-shot version of the film's special effects. The storyboard comes beautifully presented in a custom built framed display with laser-cut mount board featuring the classic movie title.
