A miniature presentation clapper board from Joseph L. Mankiewicz’s 1963 classic Cleopatra.

This presentation clapperboard was most likely given as a crew gift on the set of Cleopatra. It features the date ’25.IX.61’ along the top, which is about half-way through the production of the film. Also written on the clapperboard are the words “Director” and “Cameraman” with the names J. Mankiewicz and L. Shamroy respectively. Across the width of the clapperboard is the name of the film ‘Cleopatra’ in bold, capital letters with a slight Egyptian font. Underneath is the name of the production house, 20th Century Fox. On the reverse of the board are the words “a Titti” and the hand-written name ‘E. Mayer,’ which could indicate the name of the crew member it was gifted to.

The board is made predominantly out of wood, painted black, with all writing in white. There is a small handle to make it easy to hold and operate. The wooden clapper is fully operational and features a metal hinge. There are also small metal rings along the top of the board, indicating it might have been hung at some point. The clapperboard remains in excellent condition and measures 9.5cm (3.7”) x 6.5cm (2.5”).
