A Roman shield from Joseph L. Mankiewicz’s 1963 historical drama Cleopatra.

This shield and others like it was used by the Roman soldiers during various battle scenes throughout the film. Made of fibreglass, the shield features the Roman battle insignia of four eagle’s wings and six lighting bolts arranged in a spoke pattern. It has been handpainted in red and a brass tone which has dulled over the years, and the brass colouring now resembles a dark brown. The back displays two canvas arm straps.

The shield has been intentionally distressed by production to appear battle-worn, but it also exhibits further wear from production use and age. This includes nicks and chips along the edges of the rim, dulling and abrasions to the paintwork and general dirt from storage. It remains in an overall fair condition.
