Julius Caesar's (Rex Harrison) screen-matched cuirass from Joseph L. Mankiewicz's historical epic Cleopatra. Caesar wore his cuirass at the beginning of the film as he spoke to his soldiers after the Battle of Pharsalus, and also when he first travelled to Egypt. The cuirass screen matches these scenes through several distinctive marks and creases on the front plate. This lot comes from the archives of the Italian costume company Costumi d'Arte.

At the time of its release, Cleopatra was the most expensive film ever made. It was nominated for nine Academy Awards - including Harrison for Best Actor - and won four, including Best Costume Design.

The cuirass comprises front and back plates, both made of thick brown leather. The front plate is decorated with metal embellishments, including flowers, griffons and an eagle, and the two plates are attached via leather straps and metal buckles down each side. There is an interior label from Costumi d'Arte Peruzzi

Additional Provenance: This lot comes from the archives of the famed Italian costume company Costumi d'Arte. The company has been supplying some of the biggest film productions in the world with costumes for over 100 years.
