A full-size Medusa head prototype from the production of Desmond Davis' epic fantasy adventure Clash of the Titans. The Gorgon Medusa could turn any living being into stone with her gaze, and Perseus (Harry Hamlin) needed her head to defeat the Kraken. This lot comes from Harryhausen's personal collection.

This fibreglass head was a prototype for the one Perseus carried after decapitating Medusa. It was designed by Ray Harryhausen to match his stop-motion-animated model of Medusa, and the final piece used in the film was made by Colin Arthur, based on Harryhausen's design.

The head is hand-painted, including a pair of vivid blue eyes. There is some wear from age and use, including paint wear, minor chips, paint transfer and adhesive remnants. Dimensions: 25 cm x 15 cm x 23 cm (9.75" x 6" x 9")

Additional provenance:

This lot comes from the Ray & Diana Harryhausen Foundation, a collection of items from the long and illustrious career of special effects and animation legend Ray Harryhausen. Proceeds from this auction will assist with the Foundation's future projects, including the ongoing preservation of Harryhausen's creature collection.
