”I don’t want to be a pie! I don’t like gravy!”

A chicken pie from the Aardman animation classic Chicken Run.

Fearing for their lives when their farming owners buy a pie-making machine, the hens of a failing chicken farm plan their escape, led by de facto leader Ginger (Julia Sawalha) and American rooster Rocky (Mel Gibson).

Chicken pies like this were seen in various stages of completion during the scene in which Rocky went to rescue Ginger from Mrs Tweedy’s (Miranda Richardson) new pie machine. This pie consists of separate pie tin, crust and filling sections which can easily be removed or put together. It is made up of multiple components created for the production line sequence.

Each section of the pre-cook pie is made from resin, realistically styled and painted to resemble crinkled tin, a perfectly crimped pastry base and a pile of raw chopped vegetables. The vegetable section consists of carrots, butternut squash, mushrooms and onions, all stuck together to comprise a solid filling. Each section would have been assembled sequentially as part of the stop-motion filming process.

Signs of paint wear, chips and marks are evident on each piece from considerable use during the production. Aside from this, the pie remains in very good overall condition. A large and well-realised piece, it is a must-have for stop-motion collectors and animation fans.
