A full-size Chappie robot from Neill Blomkamp's dystopian sci-fi film Chappie. Previously known as Robot 22, Chappie (Sharlto Copley) was a law enforcement robot created by Tetravaal Tactical Robotics, Ltd. Severely damaged during an encounter with rival gangs, the robot was fitted with a prototype programme by engineer Deon Wilson (Dev Patel), granting it consciousness, and was kidnapped soon after by a group of gangsters led by Ninja (Ninja). Actor Sharlto Copley performed with the rest of the cast in a grey motion-capture suit and was digitally replaced by the visual effects team using CGI.
Created by New Zealand's Weta Workshop, this display comprises a selection of production-made components from different versions of the robot. The majority of the components are made of cast resin finished to replicate blued steel and are held together with a variety of metal bolts. Some components are painted metallic grey, and two sections of the left arm are orange.
An array of decals decorate several parts of the robot including "10111" (the South African emergency number) on the shoulders, the unit number "22" on the torso, and graffiti emblems on both sides of the head, added by Ninja's gang members when they customised the robot. Mounted on a custom-made display which features additional hand-made acrylic joints, the lot displays paint wear, and several of the pieces still have production stickers featuring inventory numbers. Chappie's antennae-like ears, his police shield chest badge and a toe on his right foot are missing from the display. Dimensions (displayed): 44 cm x 58 cm x 191 cm (17 1/4" x 22 3/4" x 75 1/4")
