Sir Rodger de Lodgerley’s (Charles Hawtrey) costume from Gerald Thomas’ comedy Carry on Henry, the twenty first film in the Carry on Series.
The film follows the story of King Henry VIII (Sid James) and how he tries to find a way of divorcing his new wife Queen Marie of Normandy, after meeting the lovely Bettina (Barbara Windsor).

Sir Rodger wears this attire as he enters Queen Marie’s (Joan Sims) bedroom in an attempt to seduce her. Throughout the film Sir Rodger becomes besotted with the Queen and her unusual love for garlic.

The costume consists of a doublet and an over jacket. Made from a light pink textured cotton, the doublet displays voluminous sleeves with oval shaped motifs that are decorated with a metallic trim. Identical decoration adorns the front of the garment and hook and eye fastenings run down the back.

The over jacket is made from brown cotton and is lined with peach coloured synthetic fabric. The sleeves feature slits which reveal gathered sections of orange velvet and the jacket features a pleated lower ‘skirt’. Both pieces feature ‘Angels Costumiers’ and handwritten labels sewn inside reading ‘Charles Hawtrey'.

The doublet displays some rips in the main fabric on one sleeve and minor marks on the linings. However, in spite of this wear, the costume remains in very good condition.
