King Henry’s (Sidney James) gold costume from Gerald Thomas’ comedy Carry on Henry, the twenty first film in the Carry On Series.
The film follows the story of King Henry VIII (Sid James) and how he tries to find a way of divorcing his new wife Queen Marie of Normandy, after meeting the lovely Bettina (Barbara Windsor).

The King wears his gold jacket during a fitting, being told the outfit he is wearing is made from the finest material and has news about his divorce.

The jacket is made from a metallic gold fabric and is lined with an orange synthetic fabric. The long length jacket features pleating around the bottom and the sleeves are decorated with oval shaped motifs that are edged with a textured metallic trim. The inside of the jacket displays an ‘Angels Costumiers’ label with the text ‘Sid James, Carry On Henry’ written in blue pen.

The costume also consists of a waistcoat made from brown satin and a pair of brown velvet breeches. The waistcoat is decorated with a trim, the front features hook and eye fastenings and the back displays brown ribbons that are tied into bows. The breeches feature ties around the ankles, black lacing on the back of the waistband and a button opening. However, the waistcoat and breeches were not seen as part of King Henry’s costume in the final cut of the film.

The lining of the jacket features some minor rips and the top ribbon on the back of the waistcoat has broken. However the costume remains in overall very good condition.
