Rachel Marron's (Whitney Houston) screen-matched complete hero "Queen of the Night" costume and original vac-formed lifecast from Mick Jackson's romantic thriller The Bodyguard. Rachel wore her costume when she performed the song "Queen of the Night" in a nightclub. The performance was halted after fans stormed the stage, and Frank (Kevin Costner) carried Rachel to safety - the iconic image featured on the poster for the movie. The Bodyguard was Whitney Houston's acting debut.
This full and complete hero costume worn by Whitney Houston was originally obtained from a crew member. The positioning of the rips on the leotard screen-match the costume to a deleted scene, in which Frank undressed Rachel at home after the show.
The "Queen of the Night" costume was created by Global Effects Inc - known for their work in crafting suits of armour. The costume comprises a chrome fibreglass headdress; a beaded high-necked collar; a chrome-finished vacuum-formed plastic bodice piece; an embellished fabric bodice with cut-out sections on the front and decorative beads; a metallic under-leotard with studded suspenders that attach to the boots; a pair of thin metal-laced armbands; a pair of black full-length beaded gloves; a belt featuring several attached strands of beads; a pleated metallic lamé crepe partial skirt; a pair of black tights; and a pair of thigh-high heeled boots with diamond-shaped decoration down their outer sides. There are intentional rips and tears on the leotard, added by the production to purposely create a dishevelled look for the deleted scene after the concert.
Accompanying the costume is an original vacuum-formed plastic lifecast of Whitney Houston's face presented on a custom-made stand. This casting was used for costume fitting, and the headdress included in this lot fits the lifecast exactly. Completing the lot is a sealed vinyl edition of The Bodyguard soundtrack and two stills from the film. The headdress displays minor damage revealing the fibreglass underneath, and one corner of the bodice has broken off, as happened during the filming of the deleted scene. Several of the beads have come away on multiple components over time. Dimensions (face casting displayed): 20 cm x 20 cm x 38.5 cm (8" x 8" x 15 1/4")
