Thomas Becket’s (Richard Burton) robe from Peter Glenville’s 1964 film adaptation Becket.
Based on the play Becket or the Honour of God by Jean Anouilh, King Henry II (Peter O’Toole) appoints his lifelong friend Thomas Becket as the Archbishop of Canterbury, expecting him to be loyal and support his wishes. However, Becket soon aligns himself with the Church going against the King, ultimately leading to conflict between the two.

Becket wears his elaborate robe during multiple scenes, most notably towards the end of the film when his Saxon deputy Brother John helps him get dressed in his ceremonial robes ready to head to the altar, knowing King Henry’s faithful barons are on their way.

The floor length robe is made from heavy cotton in a mustard-coloured raised diamond pattern and features a square neckline. A metal clasp has been used to fasten a thick band across the chest, allowing the robe to sit comfortably on the actor. A thick embroidered border with an incorporated floral design and alternating orange and pearl-like embellishments runs down the front edges and neckline, creating an elaborate appearance suitable for the character’s status. Adhered to the inside of the neckline is a Bermans and Nathan’s label with ‘R.Roulph’ written in blue ink.

The robe displays some signs of wear including marks on the lining, a tear around the neckline and threads have become loose over time. However, the period garment remains in overall very good condition for its age.
