Three prints of dyelines of the Batmobile from the production of William Dozier's and Lorenzo Semple, Jr.'s Batman. As iconic as the superhero who drove it, Batman (Adam West) and Robin (Burt Ward) used the Batmobile to chase down the villains of Gotham City and bring them to police headquarters in nearly every episode of the series.
Writer Bill Finger first introduced the Batmobile in the pages of Detective Comics issue 27. Since then, it has become inseparable in the cultural imagination from Batman lore, appearing in virtually every extension of the venerable franchise as Bruce Wayne's signature vehicle.
The version seen in the series was created by Hollywood vehicle customizer George Barris based on a Lincoln Futura concept car. These dyelines were originally drawn during pre-production on the series, then printed by production for wider distribution during the manufacturing process.
The dyelines in this set depict multiple right side and interior angles of the vehicle at various levels of detail. One is dated "9-23-65" and labeled "accepted by: Barris Custom [sic] City"; a second shows the vehicle's full length in silhouette; and the third is labeled "Batman (Pilot)," "Batmobile Plan Scale 3"=1"," and "Art Director Ed Graves" on 20th Century Fox-branded drafting paper. Each dyeline exhibits fold lines and creasing at the corners from storage, while the silhouette dyeline is torn at top. Dimensions: (largest) 70" x 61" (178 cm x 155 cm)
