Penguin's (Danny DeVito) motorised spinning and pyro SFX umbrella from Tim Burton's superhero sequel Batman Returns. Penguin (Danny DeVito) used one of his signature umbrellas to disarm Max Shreck (Christopher Walken), then fired blanks at Schreck to scare him.
Designed by production for the blank-firing scene, this umbrella features a metal shaft affixed with a battery pack-powered mechanical motor designed to twirl the nylon polyester canopy when connected to an AC power outlet. It also features a hollow metal end tip designed to resemble a gun barrel and previously equipped for pyrotechnic effects, as well as an extended resin handle painted brown to appear wooden, wrapped in black electric tape, and affixed with a small trigger which deploys the canopy.
The canopy itself is hand-painted black with a white latex spiral at centre. The umbrella exhibits flaking to the paint, rusting metal, loose rings, splintered resin, and exposed wiring from production and age. Its spinning functionality recently underwent sympathetic restoration. Dimensions: 104.25 cm x 10.25 cm x 10.25 cm (41" x 4" x 4")
