Catwoman's (Michelle Pfeiffer) costume from Tim Burton's Batman Returns. After Max Shreck (Christopher Walken) attempted to murder her, Selina Kyle was reborn as the leather-clad Catwoman.
Inspired by a sewn-together German sculpture, Catwoman's iconic costume was designed by Academy Award®-nominee Bob Ringwood. A modernized take on Bob Kane's classic Batman villain, Ringwood and Mary Vogt created her signature suit with a white stitch running throughout which gave it a hand-made look and led to a visually striking and iconic suit.
Costume sculptor Jose Fernandez was then commissioned to create a total of 36 cowls for production, nine for each stage of distress that mirrored Kyle's deteriorating mental state. Nearly all cowls were destroyed during production. Batman Returns' costume design team was nominated for a Saturn Award for their work on the film.
This display consists of a custom Pfeiffer head sculpt made by Fernandez on a fiberglass mannequin dressed with what is believed to be a hero cowl created for a late sequence in which Catwoman's suit deteriorated, a stunt corset hand-marked "Tricia" for stuntwoman Patricia M. Peters, and a pair of stunt boots. Also included are a replica bodysuit created using original white stitches harvested from a deteriorating original production bodysuit, a pair of replica gloves, and a replica braided leatherette whip with a cracker at the end. This lot exhibits discoloration to the cowl and corset, as well as cracked faux leather and rough edges on the cowl. Dimensions: 16" x 9" x 72" (40.75 cm x 23 cm x 183 cm)
