An piece of concept art used in the production of the 1992 comic-inspired action sequel Batman Returns. When the Penguin (Danny DeVito) rises to the heights of Gotham’s elite, teaming with secretary-turned-cat burglar Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer) to rid the city of Batman (Michael Keaton), the caped crusader must use all of his cunning to save Gotham City and restore peace and order.
This production copy, acquired from the collection of esteemed VFX co-ordinator Richard Edlund, was used in the conceptual process to help finalise the design of Batman’s silhouette when he extends his wing-like cape. The monochrome image is printed on white paper and shows multiple versions of the cape design from the front and rear. Annotations written on the piece state this is for a shot of Batman descending from a downtown office, and is marked “Approved 10/3/91” on the right hand side in blue pen.

Offering a fantastic insight into the design of one of cinema’s greatest heroes, the piece remains in very good condition from its use on the production, and is presented in a bespoke framed display featuring the film’s title artwork.
