The Hero Target-Seeking Batarang and Monitor from Tim Burton’s 1992 blockbuster sequel, Batman Returns. A sequel to Burton’s ’89 original, Returns finds Michael Keaton’s Batman fighting a new team of villains in the Penguin and Catwoman. Looking to out-do the previous installment, the film also featured several new batgadgets, most memorably, the target-seeking batarang. When surrounded by several of Penguin’s thugs, Batman programs this batarang to dispatch justice in one throw.
The batarang is made of several layers of styrene that have been screwed together and glued in place to appear in the unfolded position. The batarang is painted black with a red detail button affixed to the center of the static control panel. This batarang screen matches to the close-up shot in the final film where Batman is programming the weapon (see pictures).
The Sony handheld television was remoted by production to function outside of its housing and fit the opening “screen” of the batarang. During production, the set was connected to a video source of the targets being selected, though that video is no longer present. The screen is untested but has been well kept and presumably still works. Included with this lot is the original Styrofoam block that housed the batarang on set. The piece features a small chip on the left wing but remains in otherwise great condition.
