Batman's (Michael Keaton) screen-matched target-seeking Super-Batarang with a light-up video screen from Tim Burton's Batman Returns. Batman programmed his Super-Batarang to knock out members of the Red Triangle Gang before The Poodle Lady's (Anna Katarina) poodle caught it. Later, the Penguin (Danny DeVito) used it to help kidnap the Ice Princess (Cristi Conaway). Used for the insert shot of Batman programming the Super-Batarang before he threw it, this Super-Batarang screen-matches based on the deformity beside the screen.
Batman Returns featured several new gadgets, most notably, a target-seeking Batarang. Designed by illustrator Tim Flattery, the programmable Super-Batarang endured and was later adapted into the comics as one of Batman's signature gadgets. Batman Returns surpassed its predecessor during its opening weekend and broke the record set by Batman. Additionally it was the first live-action Batman film to utilize computer-generated effects, which included the Super-Batarang.
This static Batarang is hand-fabricated from sheets of plastic and a Sony Color Watchman. It features extended wings with a red D-pad attached to the front as well as a cutout portion for a Sony Watchman screen. Production remote-controlled a Watchman screen to function outside of its housing and fit the opening. During filming, the set was connected to a video source of the targets being selected. While the screen still illuminates, no video is present. A future owner could potentially fully restore it with an animated recreation of the graphics seen in the film. This lot exhibits chipped styrene, chipped paint, and lifted adhesive. Dimensions: 14" x 4.5" x 1" (35.75 cm x 11.5 cm x 2.5 cm)
