Batman's (Michael Keaton) 1:4-scale Batskiboat filming miniature with spare components from Tim Burton's Batman Returns. Batman (Michael Keaton) drove his hydrodynamic Batskiboat through the sewers under Gotham City to find Penguin's (Danny DeVito) lair, and later used it to destroy Penguin's duck vehicle to prevent him from escaping.
Batman Returns broke a number of box-office records and received Academy Award® nominations for Best Visual Effects and Best Makeup, the latter being for the work of Hollywood legends Ve Neill, Ronnie Specter, and Stan Winston. It is today regarded among the most stylish of all Batman adaptations for its more Gothic Art Deco depiction of the caped crusader's bat-themed tech, which drew on designs created for Burton's first Batman film.
This quarter-scale Batskiboat miniature was built by 4-Ward Productions and likely used by 4-Ward for shots inside the Gotham sewer tunnels. Constructed from fiberglass cast over a steel frame and coated with resin, it features a single-piece body with curved bat-shaped foils, a matching fin, and resin engines on its rear portion, all of which are painted in Batman's signature glossy black. Its rear exhaust grille is removable to allow access to an internal steel square channel. The square is believed to have been used to mount the model for filming, as no other mount points are present.
Also included are a matching metal Batskiboat leg and metal engine with white burlap in its interior from an alternate version of the Batskiboat model. As multiples were built for production, it is likely that these components were never installed on this specific miniature. The left wing of the miniature exhibits chipping in the material, exposing the underlayer materials, while the lot exhibits chipped paint throughout from production use. Dimensions: (Batskiboat) 76" x 46" x 20" (193 cm x 117 cm x 51 cm)
