Batman's (Michael Keaton) original cowl, chestpiece, and emblem on bust display from Tim Burton's Batman Returns. Batman wore his signature Batsuit throughout the film as he battled with the Penguin (Danny DeVito) and Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer).
Since the character's introduction in 1939, the Dark Knight's iconic costume has undergone revisions, ranging from a basic bat-patterned bodysuit to more technologically advanced supersuits. While the suit for Burton's original Batman film featured muscular body armor, the second iteration sculpted by Steve Wang and Jose Fernandez from design illustrations by Bob Ringwood featured a more industrial armored form.
This lot consists of one original black foam latex cowl and original foam rubber chest armor with an original yellow and black cast resin Batman chest emblem. The cowl has fastening strips and adhesive residue on its underside, where it was previously adhered to a Batsuit. Its front bib, where the emblem attaches, is affixed with a piece of fabric stickered and marked "R2."
The cape, which is a vinyl-backed fabric material differing from the film's latex style cape); arms; rubber-finned gloves; and resin belt are replicas added to complete the display. The cowl and chest armor come mounted on a custom display form featuring a lifecast of Michael Keaton. The bust is accompanied by a base featuring the film's title on a stone-like pedestal and a display base. Also included is a replica of Batman's grapple gun.
The chest armor and cowl were restored and coated for future durability, with the possibility of some paint work as well, and the chest emblem's yellow area was repainted during a previous restoration effort by a prior owner. The restoration included patching light tearing in the cowl and a crack in the outer band of the chest emblem. This lot exhibits cracking and splitting of the foam latex, and a tear to the cape. Dimensions: (bust) 27" x 14" x 45" (68.5 cm x 35.5 cm x 114.5 cm)
Estimate: $10,000 - 20,000
