Batman's (Michael Keaton) SFX grapple gun from Tim Burton's Batman Returns. Batman used his grapple gun to save Selina Kyle (Michelle Pfeiffer) from a Red Triangle Gang clown.

Although based on the iconic "spring-action reel" design introduced in Batman (1989), this specific prop was built for use in the sequel and is one of only two Batman grapple guns known to still exist.

Designed by concept artist Julian Caldow, the grapple gun became one of the most enduring elements of Batman's cinematic arsenal. In Batman (1989), multiple attachments - including grappling spears, smoke capsules, bolas, and tranquilizers - were developed to pair with a modular spring-reel base. For Returns, the design was retained but newly built props were created. Unlike the 1989 version, which had swappable accessories, this version featured the grappling hook element permanently integrated into the base unit, making it better suited to specialized effects work.

This special effects-specific grapple gun is constructed primarily of resin components with metal elements (such as the handle and internal spindle). It is believed this gun was intended specifically for shots that involved the cable spool spinning.

As such, it is designed to be shot from only from its left side, which is enclosed and painted in Batman's signature black, while the right side is opened to allow access to the motor and designed not to be seen on camera. The functional motor is capable of running a spool of braided cord in either direction around the gun's spindle in order to wind or unwind it. A pair of wires designed to extend up the performer's sleeve to trigger the retraction sequence off-camera extends from the rear of the gun.

A recently fabricated controller designed to control the reeling of the cord is also included in this lot. While the controller is capable of running the cord in or out, tension must be kept on the cord manually when going out to prevent the cord from binding. The grapple gun exhibits paint wear and chipping consistent with production use and handling. Dimensions: 9" x 5" x 3" (23 cm x 12.75 cm x 7.75 cm)
