Batman's (Michael Keaton) 1:4-scale Batmissile filming miniature from Tim Burton's Batman Returns. Needing a quick escape from the GCPD cars that pursued him following the Penguin's (Danny DeVito) remote hijacking of the Batmobile, Batman activated a last-resort function that caused the Batmobile to shed much of its form and become the sleek Batmissile that allowed the caped crusader to slip away through a tight space between two buildings.
Batman Returns broke a number of box-office records and received Academy Award® nominations for Best Visual Effects and Best Makeup, the latter being for the work of Hollywood legends Ve Neill, Ronnie Specter, and Stan Winston. It is today regarded among the most stylish of all Batman adaptations for its more Gothic Art Deco depiction of the Batmobile and its weaponry, which drew on designs created by Anton Furst and illustrator Julian Caldow for Burton's first Batman film.
This large, ornately detailed quarter-scale miniature was built and shot for the film by 4-Ward Productions. While a full-size Batmissile was also made, this is believed to be the only complete and fully detailed Batmissile model built for the production.
The miniature is constructed from fiberglass with metal frames with which to mount the wheels and four inline rubber wheels. Two feature bat logos at their centers while the other two feature tube and shock coil detailing. An exhaust fan is mounted to the Batmissile's back engine, likely for use with smoke effects. Some wiring is also visible inside the exhaust, likely leftover from a since-removed effects device used to make the jet-engine appear active. This lot exhibits some minor scuffing in the finish. Dimensions: 60" x 14" x 15" (152.5 cm x 35.75 cm x 38.25 cm)
