Batman comes straight at you here, three-quarter figure, advancing with menace and one wing of the cape torn ragged at the edge. This is an original production drawing from Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, the 1993 feature spun out of Batman: The Animated Series, and it catches the Dark Knight in the pose that mattered most to the film, the cowled figure bearing down on whoever stands in his way.

The drawing carries something most animation art never does: four signatures in the margin, those of directors Kevin Altieri and Dan Riba and writers Stan Berkowitz and Robert Skir, gathered onto the one sheet. The Warner Bros. seal sits upper right, the production number runs along the top edge, and the top peg holes are intact. It comes with its studio certificate of authenticity, which ties the signatures to the named creative team and the film by name.

The torn cape is the detail worth dwelling on. Phantasm is the film where Batman is hunted as a murderer, mistaken for the death-masked killer stalking Gotham's gangsters, and the damage to the cowl and cape reads as a man who has been through something rough on the way to clearing his name. The design here is pure Dark Deco, the angular, brooding house style that made the animated Batman the version a whole generation thinks of first.
