A prototype cowl from the 1989 comic-inspired action movie Batman. As the mayor calls for a cut in crime in advance of Gotham City’s 200th anniversary celebrations, all eyes turn on the masked vigilante Batman (Michael Keaton), leading an undercover war against crime in the city. However, when Batman accidentally knocks mobster Jack Napier (Jack Nicholson) into a vat of chemical waste, he inadvertently creates a deadly threat to the city - The Joker!
This style of cowl was worn by the Caped Crusader throughout the film as he fought the Joker and his goons throughout Gotham, with this particular cowl a prototype version that was rejected due to the foam rubber being too thick around the neck area. Conceived by costume designer Bob Ringwood and sculpted specifically for Keaton, the cowl is made of black urethane rubber to match Batman’s traditional matt black costume. The cowl features sculpted-in detailing around the eyes, eye brows and nose, as well as Batman’s trademark “ears” on top. The interior of the cowl is lined with thin woven netting. The edges of the cowl at the bottom would have been attached to the cape with makeup glue, however for the purposes of display Velcro has been applied.

Due to the age of the piece, the foam rubber has deteriorated slightly around the edges and the form of the cowl is slightly out of shape after time spent in storage. However, the cowl remains in good overall condition, and is supplied with a custom-made display base featuring the Batman logo. The piece measures 35cm x 35cm x 67cm (13.75” x 13.75” x 26.5”) when displayed.
