An original pencil drawing used in the production of the Tim Burton comic book adaptation Batman. As the mayor calls for a cut in crime in advance of Gotham City’s 200th anniversary celebrations, all eyes turn on the masked vigilante Batman (Michael Keaton), leading an undercover war against crime in the city. However, when Batman accidentally knocks mobster Jack Napier (Jack Nicholson) into chemical waste, he creates a deadly threat to the city - The Joker!
This drawing, acquired from the collection of esteemed VFX co-ordinator Richard Edlund, was used in the conceptual process to help finalise the design of Batman’s silhouette when he extends his wing-like cape. The image is rendered in black and blue pencil on tracing paper and shows a rear view of the caped crusader, with lines showing where wing supports would be present and where the cape moulded to the form of the superhero.

Offering a fantastic insight into the design of one of cinema’s greatest heroes, the piece remains in very good condition from its use on the production and is presented in a bespoke framed display featuring the film’s title artwork.
