A photo-matched "A" clapperboard from the production of Tim Burton's Batman. Notable marks and scratches on this clapperboard photo-match it to a behind-the-scenes image of Jack Nicholson (Jack Napier, aka Joker) on the Gothic-inspired set.
This clapperboard is dated "24:1:89," the final day of shooting for the main unit on the film, suggesting it was used on that particular day in addition to other dates throughout filming. Call sheets from Tuesday, January 24, 1989 note that the main unit shot scenes with Kim Basinger's Vicki Vale and Robert Wuhl's Alexander Knox at the Gotham Globe offices prior to wrap.
Credited with launching the modern era of superhero cinema, Batman dominated the box office during the summer of 1989, shattered merchandising records, and reshaped public perception of the character from campy joke to iconic myth. It remains, for many fans and critics, the definitive live-action Batman film.
This wooden clapperboard features the film's title, and the names of director Burton and cinematographer Roger Pratt hand-painted on the front. "24:1:89 DAY INT" is handwritten on tape along the bottom of the clapperboard, and a large "A" is made of tape on the reverse, indicating it was for "A" camera. The date on the board differs from the one seen in the photo-matched image, as new dates and locations were written onto tape and simply plastered over the old tape throughout filming. The clapperboard exhibits general paint wear from production use and age. Dimensions: 8" x 10" x 0.5" (20.5 cm x 25.5 cm x 1 cm)
Estimate: $15,000 - 30,000
