Captain America's (Chris Evans) shield from Joss Whedon's Avengers: Age of Ultron. This distinctive iteration of the hero's iconic weapon was introduced with a new technological upgrade: a magnetic return system. Within the film's narrative, the shield - originally created by Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper) from vibranium, the rarest metal on Earth - was used not only as a defensive barrier but also as a primary offensive weapon. In Age of Ultron, Rogers used his shield in major action sequences, including the assault on the Hydra facility operated by Wolfgang von Strucker (Thomas Kretschmann) and the climactic battle in Sokovia where the Avengers attempted to thwart Ultron (James Spader).
This version of the shield was designed specifically for Age of Ultron to support the concept of a magnetized return mechanism. It originated from the on-set props team after filming wrapped. Unlike previous versions that relied solely on the wearer manually gripping interior handles, this shield includes a modified strapping system on the reverse. Two padded leather straps are secured with metal bolts and arranged to wrap around the performer's forearm, emulating the way the magnetic feature allowed the shield to snap onto Captain America's arm in the film.
Though the on-screen effect was largely enhanced with visual effects, the physical prop was adapted to reflect this new functionality. The forearm-oriented strap design visually supported the idea of a shield that could be summoned and reattached in combat without traditional gripping. The shield itself is a disc-shaped, concavo-convex piece composed of aluminum and fiberglass, with a central panel constructed from resin.
It is painted in red, silver, and blue with a white star at the center, and the rivets used to secure the star remain visibly exposed. The front surface displays light production wear in the form of surface scratches, while the rim and rear show minor cracking. Also included are the original black Polaris nylon used to carry the shield into set during production and a red wool blanket for padding, along with a custom stand added after production for display. Dimensions: 24.5" x 24.5" x 2.75" (62 cm x 62 cm x 7 cm)
Estimate: $60,000 - 120,000
