Large Mayan Dagger

A large Mayan dagger from Mel Gibson’s 2006 historical adventure film Apocalypto. After a brutal attack on his village led by Zero Wolf (Raoul Trujillo), Jaguar Paw (Rudy Youngblood) and his friends were bound and led away to be sacrificed by the high priest at a Mayan city temple. Knives featured throughout the film, including the village raid and later sequences in which Jaguar Paw fought his captors.

To maintain the accuracy of the film, extensive research was undertaken into Mayan weaponry. The dagger features a jagged black resin blade replicating the glossy appearance of obsidian, a naturally formed volcanic glass used extensively in pre-Columbian Mesoamerican culture. The dagger has a curved, hand-carved wooden handle, one side of which has been coloured black. The handle features five engraved diagonal stripes along its shaft and a hole in its bolster. Threaded through the hole is a knotted brown faux leather strip.

The lot is in very good production-used condition.
