A rare archive of 98 prints of storyboards from Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now signed by legendary production designer Dean Tavoularis as well as a "5th Special Forces" concept sketch hand-drawn by Tavoularis' brother and production illustrator Alex, and a production folder. In one of several alternate endings from Coppola and screenwriter John Milius, Captain Ben Willard (Martin Sheen) and Colonel Walter Kurtz (Marlon Brando) were "blown to eternity" in the American military's bloody final evisceration of Kurtz's Cambodian stronghold.
Upon its world premiere at the 1979 Cannes Film Festival, Apocalypse Now won the coveted Palme d'Or, and became one of the most critically acclaimed runs in cinema history. Revered today as Coppola's great masterpiece, the film earned innumerable accolades, including BAFTA® and Academy Award® nominations for Tavoularis.
These photocopies of Tavoularis' colorful storyboards feature scene numbers and descriptions, such as "sc276 Cont. Willard Pulls Kurtz Thru Jungle," and "sc277-PBR-River-Willard Gets Kurtz On Board," "Willard Comes to Kurtz in Jungle," and "Sc. 262 Stream of Lead," printed beneath each image. Of the 98 storyboards, 77 of them were were created for an alternate ending to Apocalypse Now. Each is hand-signed in ink in its bottom right corner by Tavoularis. The storyboards come with a three-ring binder and plastic sleeves for protection. The concept sketch, labeled "Team A-26 5th Special Forces Nu Mung Bam" is rendered and signed by Alex Tavoularis in graphite and ink on paper. Also included is a manilla folder hand-marked "Curtains for Kurtz Willard Arrives to Murder Kurtz" in blue ink. Some pages exhibit yellowing and edge wear from age.
