A prop decapitated head used in the production of the 2013 action sequel 300: Rise of an Empire. Charting the rise of the Persians from the Battle of Marathon to the Hot Gates and beyond, the film centres on the Persian God-King Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro), his faithful admiral Artemisia (Eva Green) and their nemesis, the masterful Athenian general Themistocles (Sullivan Stapleton).
This head was created for the film’s recounting of the heroism of the Spartans at the Hot Gates by Queen Gorgo (Lena Headey) ahead of the Spartans’ arrival at the Battle of Salamis. The scenes featuring the beheading of Astinos (Tom Wisdom) at the hands of a Persian horseman in 300 were reshot for the film, with this head created for the sequence.

Made of silicon with plastic teeth and bone structure, the head is a faithful recreation of the young Spartan’s face, with hand-punched hair across the scalp, eyebrows and chin. Hair has also been applied to the eyelids. The skin has been finished using airbrushed paints to give it a lifelike flesh tone with bloody, cleaved muscle and flesh at the neck, which has various cast-in detail including an oesophagus and spine.

A fantastic and evocative piece from the series, this head remains in very good condition.
