A prototype mask and mould from Stanley Kubrick's sci-fi epic 2001: A Space Odyssey. Apes surrounded the Monolith during the opening "Dawn of Man" sequence. This lot originated from the collection of legendary make-up artist Stuart Freeborn.

The foam-latex mask is hand-punched with faux hair and is a test for a "man-ape" character concept. Kubrick felt it would be problematic due to censorship issues and opted for a hairier "ape-man". The lot includes a plaster mould. The mask is stiff and brittle with light cracking. Dimensions (mask): 18 cm x 16 cm x 10 cm (7 1/4" x 6 1/4" x 4")
