A Newton and Co. Magic Lantern projector. Considered a precursor to the slide projector, the lantern was used as such by projecting an image painted on to a glass slide by using a particular lens to focus candle light or electric light when it came later. The lantern reached peak popularity in the 18th century for its use to both entertain and educate.
This piece is comprised of real mahogany wood as well as brass plates and tubes used in the projection lens. The lantern includes a black metal chimney as well as a small door on either side for access to the illuminant. The lantern shows some wear from age, but remains in overall very good condition.
