A Thessalonian shield from the production of Wolfgang Petersen’s 2004 historical epic Troy.

This style of shield can be seen clearly being used by the Thessalonian army during the first scenes, when Achilles (Brad Pitt) is summoned to fight the giant warrior Boagrius (Nathan Jones), and later as part of the Spartan army in the spectacular mass battle scenes. The shield is made from wood covered in canvas with padding on the front for the actor’s protection. On the back are two leather carry straps which are held in place with rivets, which can be seen on the front. The kidney shaped shield has been painted white with a pale grey extended ‘S’ shape painted in the centre.

It has been intentionally distressed and shows plenty of signs of use on set, as well as dried sand in places. It remains in a very good, production used condition.

Materials: Wood, Man-Made Woven Fibres, Leather, Ferrous Metals.
