A pre-production Kodalith cel from the production of Steve Lisberger’s 1982 cult sci-fi film Tron.
A computer hacker is trapped in a digital world and forced to participate in gladiatorial combat, with his only chance of escape coming in the form of a heroic security program.
This cel and others like it were made for the production while testing out the colour scheme and design that would make Tron famous. The filmmakers used a lot of traditional animation techniques to colour each cel, such as ‘backlit’ animation.
The cel features an actor dressed similarly to those in the final cut of the film with a painted overlay to fill in the colour over the body. To the right of the cel is one of the disks that the characters use to battle each other. The bottom right corner has ‘004’ handwritten twice and ‘9988’ printed in black.
The cel has some wear from age and production use, including some colour transfer from the cel to the paper underneath and some additional smudging. There is also some tearing in the bottom left but considering the age of the piece it remains in an excellent condition.
