Naval Aviator's Dress Uniform

Stock #79165

A naval aviator’s dress uniform from the production of Tony Scott’s 1986 action classic Top Gun.

Daring Lieutenant Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell (Tom Cruise) competes to be top of his class at the United States Navy's elite fighter weapons school – and learns things from a civilian instructor outside the school’s curriculum, with dramatic consequences.

Naval officers wore white dress uniforms in several scenes, including the graduation and Maverick’s court martial. This uniform consists of a white polyester jacket and trousers with a naval officer’s cap. It includes a supervisor-signed wardrobe log sheet from Paramount Pictures detailing the item number and when it was checked out for set.

Featuring a single-breasted design with standing collar, the jacket is adorned with golden Naval Aviator Insignia wings and rank insignia ribbons over the left pocket. Two navy blue hard shoulder boards feature a single star and stripe, possibly indicating the rank of ensign. A handwritten note stapled to the left sleeve reads ‘Monty Jordan – Jester’, indicating that the suit may have been issued for stuntman Jordan, cast as ‘Commander Phillips.’

The jacket has two breast pockets with pointed button-down flaps fastened by detachable 22-1/2-line Navy eagle gilt buttons, and five detachable 35-line Navy eagle gilt buttons on the front. It is sized ‘46” – M’, with an inner ‘Patriot’ label displaying the handwritten name ‘Kimber’.

The cap is white but faded with age, completed by a navy blue peak with embroidered gold-coloured crest. Some light marks and stains can be seen across the top. The inner label has been handwritten with ‘Monty Jordan – Stuntmasters’. This indicates that the cap may have been issued for Jordan. The cap is marked size ‘7 ½’.

The trousers, by ‘Flying Cross’, close with a zip fly and feature a small black smudge on the left thigh. They are marked size ’37 R’.

Despite some minor wear from ageing and use in production, the piece remains in very good overall condition.
