Mace's (Chris Evans) dog tag comms unit and cross necklace used in the production of the 2007 Danny Boyle sci-fi thriller Sunshine.
Set in the year 2057, Capa (Cillian Murphy) and a team of astronauts are sent to ‘reboot’ the sun with a nuclear device after it begins to fail, putting Earth into an ice age. When a signal is picked up from their predecessor, the Icarus I, they set course for the lost ship to find out what happened to her crew and why her mission failed.
This comms unit and cross necklace were made for the production and were worn by Mace throughout the film. The comms units are used by the crew to communicate with each other wherever they are on the ship. It consists of two rectangular pieces of grey resin attached to a black plastic necklace. One of the sections is designed to look like a small speaker and is made of beige acrylic, while the other is made of translucent rubber.
The cross is gold in colour and can be glimpsed briefly around Mace’s neck in the scene where the crew watch the transit of Mercury across the sun. It comes with a small blue box to store it in.
The pieces show some wear from production use and age, including a couple of places on the comms tags where the paint has been scuffed away, but despite this they remain in a very good condition.
Materials: Ferrous Metals, Acrylic, Plastic, Rubber.
