A Hopper Bug maquette from the production of Paul Verhoeven's sci-fi action film Starship Troopers. Tippett Studio created maquettes of the film's various Bugs as three-dimensional representations of the creatures that would be largely digitally animated on screen. They were tools for shot planning, lighting reference, and other purposes. Tippett Studio founder Phil Tippett is credited as creature visual effects supervisor and co-producer on the film, and received a Best Visual Effects nomination for his work on the film at the 70th Academy Awards®.
This Hopper Bug maquette was sculpted by Peter Konig and is cast in resin. It is painted metallic green with red details, and has articulating joints. Each wing is constructed from translucent vacuum-formed plastic and is painted with black-and-green detail. The maquette's legs and wings can be detached, making it easier to pack for transport.
Presented on a custom metal-and-wooden base, the maquette is stored in a custom Tippett Studio wooden crate and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by Tippett. The maquette shows some wear from use, such as scratches to the paint and repairs to some of the legs with glue. Dimensions (maquette): 68.5 cm x 53.5 cm x 59.5 cm (27" x 21" x 23½"); dimensions (crate): 76 cm x 40.5 cm x 45.5 cm (30" x 16" x 18")
