Star Trek: The Original Series

'The Cage'-Style Spearhead

Stock #72143

A spearhead from the archives of RKO Pictures. One of Hollywood’s Big Five during the Golden Age of cinema, RKO Pictures produced a diverse range of films from 1929 to 1956, from King Kong through to Top Hat and Citizen Kane, leveraging its massive studio space with some of the finest artists in Hollywood.

With the closure of the studio in 1957 in the wake of box office flop The Conqueror, RKO would ultimately become a part of Paramount Pictures, who would go on to use one of the numerous leftover spearheads from the old RKO prop inventory in the production of the Star Trek pilot “The Cage”, used by Captain Pike (Jeffrey Hunter) to kill a Kalar on Rigel VII. While the pilot went unaired, the footage from the pilot was later reused for the two-part Star Trek episode “The Menagerie”.

Made of machined metal, the spearhead features a serrated edge on the rear with a long edge on the front. The edges have been blunted to prevent serious injury during use on the production. A stamp at the base of the spearhead reads “RKO A10421”. Displaying some light surface corrosion and marks from use on numerous RKO productions, the piece remains in very good condition.
