Ned Kynaston’s (Billy Crudup) orange dress from Richard Eyre’s 2004 drama stage Beauty.

A female theatre dresser creates a stir and sparks a revolution in seventeenth century London theatre by playing Desdemona in Othello. But what will become of the male actor she once worked for and eventually replaced?

Ned wore his orange dress while playing Desdemona in Shakespeare’s Othello in the early scenes of the film. The brightly coloured custom made dress is in stark contrast to the neutral colours worn by the rest of the cast. This is mentioned in the commentary on the DVD and was purposely done to make the dress and Ned’s portrayal of the character gaudy and unrefined. The dress is made from a satin-like shiny orange fabric with cream coloured material around the collar and the sleeves. The front of the dress and the collar have gold and faux jewel decorations on them. The back of the dress laces up and there is a corseted undergarment padded with fake bosoms.

The dress shows minimal wear from production use and remains in an otherwise very good condition.
