A number 2 robot decal from John Badham’s 1986 sci-fi comedy Short Circuit.
Johnny 5 is part of a group of experimental S.A.I.N.T. robots in the U.S. Army’s NOVA Laboratories. One day a trial goes wrong, causing number 5 to be electrocuted and develop an intelligent personality. It escapes and befriends Stephanie Speck (Ally Sheedy). A series of madcap adventures ensues as its creators Newton Crosby (Steve Guttenberg) and Ben Jabituya (Fisher Stevens) try to track it down before the overzealous U.S. army does.
Each of the five robots featured round blue and white numerical decals like this on the sides of their heads. This particular decal was one of several made for use on the Number 2 robot, who made a gin and tonic for Dr Howard Marner (Austin Pendleton) with the words, ‘Your cocktail, Dr Marner’ during the film’s opening robot demonstration sequence.
The circular decal is made from glossy paper with a dark blue background and white digital-style ‘2’ within a white circle. It shows signs of use during production in the form of fabric adhered to the reverse – marks and folds can be seen across the face. Aside from this wear, it remains in fair overall condition.
