Shakespeare In Love

Set of Greenwich Party Blueprints

Stock #94117

“I know something of a woman in a man's profession. Yes, by God, I do know about that”

A set of blueprints designed for the production of John Madden’s 1998 historical romance Shakespeare in Love.

The young William Shakespeare (Joseph Fiennes) is struggling for ideas and money, but meets Viola de Lesseps (Gwyneth Paltrow), the daughter of a wealthy merchant who disguises herself as a man to audition for one of his plays. Their relationship inspires William to write Romeo and Juliet and cast Viola.

These blueprints were used as part of set to visualise the exterior of Queen Elizabeth I’s (Judi Dench) Greenwich court, seen during the fireworks scene where Viola is called to court and Shakespeare accompanies her disguised as a woman.

The set consists of three sheets shows various elevation diagrams for an elaborate stand used for an imperial brazier, an aerial view of the layout of the grounds outside the court and a front elevation drawing of half a shield. Drawn in pencil on large sheets of tracing paper, each page displays various annotations, dimensions and features a small box detailing the production title, set, scale, the artist and various other pieces of information. The sheets have a hole punched piece of card at one end where they have previously been held together in a production binder.

The set has been rolled and stored within a tube causing fold lines and minor creases. The sheet displaying the layout of the ground features wear to the edges and has been torn in the upper right corner. However, the set remains in overall good production used condition and the biggest sheet in the set measures 76 cm x 155 cm (30” x 61”).
