A production-used shovel with rounded blade from Steven Spielberg’s 1998 WWII drama Saving Private Ryan.
After the death of his brothers on D-Day, orders come down from high command for the retrieval of Private James Ryan (Matt Damon) from behind enemy lines. Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks) and his squad set out through war-torn Normandy to find him, battling the Germans along the way.
Shovels such as this one are used the main characters as they dig a grave for T-4 Medic Wade (Giovanni Ribisi). It is made of wood, reinforced with metal splints at the top and bottom of the shaft, leading to a rusting steel blade. The shovel’s blade is sheathed in a khaki brown hessian cover, which is held on with fabric straps secured with metal buckles. There are rust patches all over the hessian cover and printed on one side is ‘U.S.’ and on the other is ‘B.B.S.Co. 1943.’
This piece shows signs of deliberate ageing and distress by production, plus some signs of production use and handling, but nevertheless remains in good condition.
Materials: Wood, Ferrous Metals, Hessian, Man Made Woven Fibres.
