A green suit belonging to Richard III (Sir Ian McKellen) from Richard Loncraine’s 1995 adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Richard III.
Reimagined to a 1930s setting and following a bloody civil war in England, the fascistic Richard III (Sir Ian McKellen) usurps his brother and becomes king, assassinating anyone who stands in his way.
Richard wore his green suit during the ball near the beginning of the film. Onscreen the suit was completed with a sash, medals and other military regalia – these items are not included in this set.
The costume is militaristic in style, with generous black collars and cuffs adorned with ornate golden embroidery. Large brass button detailed with crowns and cannons feature on the front of the suit jacket and lapels. ‘Ian McKellen’ is handwritten on an inside label. The trousers also feature a black and silver stripe down the side of each leg.
The suit shows some wear from production use and age, most notably around the collar and cuffs where some of the embroidery has come away, but it otherwise remains in excellent condition.
Materials: Man-Made Woven Fibres, Ferrous Metals.
