A production-used clapperboard from the set of James Cagney’s final film appearance, the Milos Forman-directed Ragtime.

Ragtime tells the story of Coalhouse Walker Jr. (Howard E. Rollins Jr.), a young black pianist who becomes embroiled in the lives of an upper-class white family at a time of substantial racial tension in early 1900s New York City.

Ragtime was nominated for eight Oscars® in 1981 and was the legendary James Cagney’s final film role. He came out of a 20-year retirement to do the role as a way of recovering from a stroke he had suffered.

The clapperboard is made of wood with a metal hinge and is painted predominantly black with white boxes and writing. The title of the film, as well as the director and director of photography, are handwritten on the board. Tape has been added to the board as an area for additional information. On the tape is written ‘Roll 570’ and ‘19th December 1980’.

The item shows wear from production use, age and storage and a lot of the paint has flaked away over time. Despite this it remains in a fair condition.
