Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists! The,

Royal Society Portrait Set #3

Stock #47112

”Now listen Charles, we’ve all done something unforgivable. I’ve betrayed my pirate honour, you’ve betrayed science, and Mr. Bobo’s betrayed the animal kingdom”

A pair of portraits from Aardman Animation’s 2012 adventure comedy The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists!

Pirate Captain (Hugh Grant) is determined to win the Pirate of the Year Award and defeat his rivals Black Bellamy (Jeremy Piven) and Cutlass Liz (Salma Hayek). His quest takes him and his crew from their home on Blood Island, to the streets of Victorian London.

These portraits appear at the Royal Society, when Pirate Captain and his crew are disguised as scientists and show off Polly, their pet and the last living dodo. The portraits can seen hanging on the walls when Pirate Captain comes face-to-face with Queen Victoria (Imelda Staunton).

Made of wood and resin, the painting depict two scientists, one with a pair of eyeballs and a brain in jars, the other with some sort of machine. The portraits are in ornate gold frames and have candles attached to each side. The back of the portraits hide two electrical cables held down with black tape, through which the candles could be lit during production, although these remain untested. The portraits have been intentionally distressed to look old, but a couple of the candles have come unstuck from their positions on the frames.

The pieces show some wear from production use and storage, but otherwise remain in an excellent condition.

Materials: Resin, Ferrous Metals, Wood, Plastic.
